June 2023 Newsletter

President's Message

Summer is upon us and our ACTIVITIES and OUTINGS are in full flight.

ACTIVITIES - a whole host are underway , ranging from breakfast and lunch get togethers to golf and hiking. And speaking of golf, don't forget to sign up for our annual tournament taking place on June 27th. For complete details on our activity lineup go to the ACTIVITIES button on our website.

OUTINGS - a number of entertaining and interesting outings are planned including the latest confirmation, Base Borden tour and lunch, September 11. Outings details are again included at the end of the website ACTIVITIES button.

In a recent telephone survey re: meeting attendance a number of phone numbers listed on our Club roster were out of service. We suspect a cancelation of land lines with the use of cell phones. If this is the case for you, please edit and update your profile on the memberships roster.

We also note many missing photos on the roster. If you are attending a meeting and don't have your photo on the roster, Eddie Sokoloff, our Past Pandemic President, will be taking photos at our June 15th meeting. Or you can take a selfie and submit it to Webmaster Bill Booth...bill@billbooth.ca.

Our Club continues to grow and we will be inducting several new members on June 15th. I encourage you to bring a guest(s) to a meeting as this is our primary source of new members.

So a busy time for our Club. We hope to see you on June 15th.

Ron Mitchell

Thanks

Quoting Sherry Anderson "Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless". The Blue Mountain Probus Club and the Collingwood Probus Club were blown away by your contributions to our Lawn Bowling Event on Wednesday. You were all awesome 👍

NOTABLY: - Waivers, badges, questionnaires (and more) ----- Jane and Graeme Wallace. Always have their hands up whenever there is a call for volunteers.

  • Coaches ----- Jane Moore, Barry Zimmermann, Karen Hall, Joy Barr, Ingrid McBride, Helga Wannamaker (hope you are feeling better, Helga). WOW! Training and coaching 18 newbees. all at once is a challenging task but you always find ways to get it done ... and well done.

  • Kitchen ----- Bruce Lowe ( you're back). We continue to be impressed with your fantastic service and welcoming smile ..... assisted by energetic Virgina Lock.

  • Bar B Q ----- Eddie Sokoloff (while Eddie is not a Lawn Bowling member he is a great food shopper and burger flipper). Eddie, your contribution speaks for itself.

  • Lead planner, organizer and convener ----- Norma Gee. Your in person marketing outreach to both Probus Clubs promoting Lawn Bowling's tagline "Your Best Choice for Fitness and Sociability" and their attention-getting slogan "Lawn Bowling is Like Curling on Grass" made it possible to launch the Probus 2023 tournament. I am continually impressed by the results you produce.

THE ATTACHED IS ONE OF THE 15 SURVEY RESPONSES LEFT ON THE TABLES. MOST RESPONSES WERE VERY SIMILAR. HERE'S A HIGH FIVE TO YOU ALL 🖐

And a thank you goes to Probus President, Ron Mitchell for taking time out of a busy schedule to come out to wave the Probus flag. Ron, you are really good at cheering everybody up.

Some paddling pics from our opening day. The weather was awesome and everyone had a good outing on the Beaver river. Carl

AVRO Arrow Tour

On May 18, a total of 43 attended our visit to Edenvale Airport, only a half-hour drive from the Collingwood Legion to see the only full-size replica of the AVRO ARROW aircraft.in existence.

Designed and built in Canada, it was considered the most advanced supersonic aircraft in the world. It was designed to fly as high as 60,000 feet and at Mach 2, twice the speed of sound. No one in attendance could believe just how big it is until you stand beside it,

Sadly the program was suddenly canceled on Friday, Feb.20, 1959 by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, putting over 20,000 workers out of jobs. All 5 planes built were ordered scrapped, leaving our local full-size replica, the only example to remain of this significant event in Canada's history.

Judging by the positive feedback, our first outing event was very well received by all who attended.

50/50 Winners
