Every September the PROBUS Club of Blue Mountain elects a new President, and for the year 2024/25 it is my great honour to have been selected for this role. I am looking forward to being the Club President for the upcoming year, working with the management committee and meeting many more members at monthly meetings and PROBUS activities.
Our club is very fortunate to have a hard working management group and many members who step forward to lead activities during the year. Without their unselfish donation of time and experience the club would be much less vibrant and successful in attracting and retaining members for many years.
New on the management committee for 24/25 are members Nick Best and Dale White. Nick Best will be responsible for pulling together content for the monthly on line newsletter. In this role he will be reaching out to the activity leaders for photos and reports as well as the management team for any messages to be included in the news letter. Dale White will be responsible for the meeting review notes and photos from the monthly meeting and will work closely with our creative and professional webmaster Bill Booth. I can’t thank enough all our management committee members for their commitment and expertise in making the club as successful as it is today with over 200 full-time members, more than 20 annual trips/activities and numerous weekly sporting events or fellowship opportunities over breakfast, lunch or just coffee.
In 2024 we are so fortunate to have returning management committee members of Stephen Hyndman - Past President, Membership Chairman - Dan Edwards, Treasurer - Gene Peycha, Secretary - Tom James, Support and Compassionate Care - Ron Mitchell, Marketing and Communications - David Thomson, Guest Speaker Chair - Don Stockman, Activities Co-Ordinator - Chris Meleskie, Webmaster- Bill Booth along with new members Newsletter Nick Best and Meeting review Dale White.
In addition there are numerous members who volunteer to lead activities throughout the year who I would like to recognize and wholeheartedly thank for keeping the club vibrant and successful including:
Last month alone the club sponsored tours to Agora Glass ( John Kutcy), Base Borden RCAF Museum ( Ron Mitchell) Green Island Paddle ( Jim Higgins) Cycling, Model Airplane Club ( Richard Rood) and Avro Arrow presentation ( Richard MacLeod).
You should have noticed that we have been able to maintain the annual returning member’s dues at $55 without an increase with much thanks to Treasurer Gene Peycha and all the activity leaders carefully balancing expenses with activity revenues. In summary the club is strong both financially and in membership going into the next season and I am delighted to continue to build on that legacy as President in 2024/25.

As a dedicated educator with a Master’s in Education, Jenn Straver been passionately teaching French for over 7 years. Beyond the classroom, her heart belongs to animals. From growing up surrounded by dogs, cats, and horses to fostering dogs from Texas shelters, her love for animals knows no bounds. Jenn is proud to have adopted a furry companion of her own, a lovable dog named Simcoe with whom she shared 7 amazing years. Currently, Jenn has a long haired chihuahua named Riley that’s her side kick.
Combining her love for teaching and animals, Jenn is thrilled to lead programs at GTHS that allow her to share her passion with the community!
I enjoy sharing my life with my husband, Don, our two cats, OC and Juliette, and some foster kitties on our 6 acre country property. Gardening, caning, jam making, baking and making things are important and happy tasks for me. Growing up on a farm with 10 siblings helped hone some of these skills.
Art has always been a huge part of my life, as I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil. Practicing my craft, either as a hobby, therapy, for income or for fundraising brings joy to my heart.
My latest passion is designing landscapes, using native plants for the birds, bees and butterflies to use and thrive.

Cool but sunny fall day! The original Brew Tour was rained out, and this was the first replacement date we could maneuver. We dodged some isolated storm cells coming in from the west and arrived at our first destination (Collingwood Brewery) thirsty but dry. The timing of the ride coincided nicely with the Collingwood Craft Brewery Tour and we all got our passports stamped!
On the morning of Wednesday October 2, a full roster of 25 attended a tour of the Collingwood Agnora Glass tour. We were welcomed by management, given a brief history of the company and then broken up into four smaller groups. Agnora has carved out a strong niche market for larger than standard and custom glass products. Most of its sales are within North America, but it also does custom orders for some large, global companies, with locations in other countries. The tour was fascinating, explaining how they start with large, imported, raw glass panels and transform them into a variety of oversize and custom glass solutions, which are then shipped out in custom shipping crates. After a one hour tour of the very successful business, 15 of the attendees gathered for lunch at Montana's BBQ and Bar in town. All in all a great outing that we will hopefully be able to offer again to other members in the future.
The geology field trip took place on Sept 26 as planned, unavoidably delayed one day due to rainfall.
The field trip leader and instructor was Andrew Miall; author, researcher and retired professor of geology, University of Toronto. Andrew is a seasonal resident of Blue Mountains, a former employee of the Geological Survey of Canada and several companies in Calgary.
The morning field trip visited five sites, carefully chosen to showcase particular examples of specific geological features unique to our region. The complex geological history of our area was outlined in detail by Andrew along with companion handout materials that he provided. The experience was capped off with an informal lunch and further opportunities to question Andrew and discuss what we learned. Hats off to Andrew Miall for taking the time to share his knowledge and expertise with a grateful group of field trip attendees.
The event logistics were hammered out in advance by Chris Meleskie and Dennis Onn, who are grateful to all of those who attended.
PROBUS Ski Legends is running 2 trips to 2 destinations for 2025:
Sun Peaks
Why join this trip? Legends runs a ski trip to Sun Peaks every year, and there’s a reason why many members go back many times. It’s Canada’s second largest ski resort with 4270 acres of skiable terrain across three peaks, Mount Tod, Mount Morrissey and Sundance with lots of powder and excellent grooming. Located in the BC interior, Sun Peaks offers dry snow and fluffy powder with picturesque surroundings. It is a quaint small purpose-built ski town and the friendly village is traffic-free with many great restaurants. And new for 2025, the West Bowl chairlift is opening, serving even more awesome powder!
Banff/Lake Louise
Why join this trip? Haven’t you always wanted to have a trip staying at the 2 iconic Rocky Mountain hotels, the Chateau Lake Louise and the Banff Springs? We first ran this trip in 2022 and everyone loved it! We will spend the first 4 nights at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, a 10-minute shuttle ride to Lake Louise ski area. And then on our 4th ski day while we are skiing, our luggage will be transferred to the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel where we will stay the last 3 nights and get to also enjoy the town of Banff.

Pregame Dinner before at a restaurant to be selected
Nine hearty soles gathered at Boston pizza for lunch! This is one of the favourites for the Collingwood Blues pregame dinner and drinks. And no wonder. Good food, cold drinks and a fantastic price. Still scoping out a location for November. Stay tuned!
The Kitchen Bridge group continues to meet the first and third Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m. at the legion. Great relaxed camaraderie.
We welcome all who have an interest in the game of bridge -- whether a beginner or expert. Play commences at 1:00 pm but, if you cannot come until later, come anyway. We will fit you into a game throughout the afternoon.

PROPOSED TOPICS FOR PB IG 2024 MEETINGS – subject to confirmations
A total of 41 participants in 12 vehicles met in the parking lot of the Playtime Casino in Wasaga Beach. It was a lovely sunny day, although it was fairly cool. The tour started at 10:00 am. The vehicles going on the tour, set off every two minutes. There were 8 cars with four people, 1 car with three people, and 3 cars with only two people.
The route started in Wasaga Beach, travelling on some back roads, before moving onto Mosley Street. This led to Crossland and then we headed North to Tiny Beaches and Balm Beach. The scenery along that area was lovely with wonderful views of the bay and it passed some beautiful cottages and several large summer houses. There were some 35 clues for the contestants to observe and answer.
The winners were David and Vicki Thomson, Andy Banasza and Marilyn Beaton, who scored 34 points. Second with 33 points were Jack and Sue Marley with George and Fran Christie. Third with 32 points were Bruce and Paulette West with Fraser and Judy Main. The winning trophy was beautifully crafted by George Christie and Graeme presented it to the successful team. There were prizes for the top three vehicles.
The tour ended at the Boathouse Eatery in Midland. We had a very good lunch with great service.
