President’s Message

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!” – perhaps this will be the last you hear those words for some time!

The new year 2024 has begun, and while none of us want to wish our time away (time is all too short in any event), some would argue that 2023 was a year to forget. In Canada, with wildfires and floods, the global effects of climate change, and with serious tensions in many quarters around the world, this past year has left us with many concerns and worries for all that we treasure and hold dear.

We are most fortunate to live in Canada, and there are few places in this world where we could feel as safe and secure. As for Collingwood, while it struggles with the challenges of growth and the problems of any small urban community, the quality of life we enjoy on the southern shores of Georgian Bay is second to none. In Canada, there are many reasons to be optimistic about our future, and about the year that lies ahead – that certainly applies to us here in Collingwood.

The PROBUS Club of Blue Mountain plays, perhaps, a small but nevertheless important role in that quality of life. It is my understanding that we are the second largest men’s PROBUS club in Canada, continually adding members who bring new excitement and promise for the future. It will be an exciting year ahead for our Club and, like you, I am anticipating the many outings and activities that are offered.

Our Club runs totally on the efforts of the many volunteers who step forward to offer their services for the benefit of us all. Volunteering brings many benefits, least of which is the satisfaction from a job well done. None of the tasks that must be performed require excessive effort, but each is necessary to ensure the club remains successful and vibrant. If you have not yet decided to volunteer, I hope you do give consideration to stepping forward. I think somewhere I the past, somebody once said “We need YOU”.

Looking forward to seeing you at our January meeting and throughout 2024!

Speaker

The Speaker for our January 18, 2024 meeting will be Bonnie Campbell.

TopicStronger Solutions for Aging Well

How much effort does it take to get out of your favourite armchair, climb a flight of stairs, or bend over to pick something up off the floor? You may have noticed that your balance is declining, and you used to be more steady on your feet. You find that you are more cautious in your daily routines.  Instead of accepting steadily declining health and that things are more challenging to do as we age, learn the most potent tool we have that can change the trajectory of our health and life span and improve all aspects of our daily life, allowing us to age well.

Bonnie has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and is a certified Personal Trainer, Exercise Therapist, Nutrition Coach, and Functional Aging Specialist and holds many Crossfit certifications.  She has been a lead coach for a McMaster University and Canadian Frailty Network research project on strength training in older adults.  Bonnie is also a BoneFit Trainer with Osteoporosis Canada and has worked as a Physiotherapy Assistant at the Orthopaedic Sports Institute.

Investment Club:

NOTES FROM INVESTMENT GROUP MEETING, Jan 09, 2024 This meeting was another resounding success with twelve active participants. A comment overheard afterwards; “It was certainly enlightening to be among these well informed and experienced investors and thinkers. I’m looking forward to the next one!”

We discussed the usual wide range of topics: New tax legislation effective January 1st ; a list of excellent investment guides written by legendary stock pickers and managers, (including one suitable for our children and grandchildren); some of our investment returns over 2023 and the reasons for the success many had; Tax, political and social issues that could effect investment markets; The stock picking “game” and a resolution to update the prices monthly so we can watch the “horse race”; the Group also considered alternative meeting venues and topics for future meetings.

Lunch Club:

No reservation, no problem!!!  Actually, we didn't originally have a reservation, but the good people at Northwinds were able to accommodate us.

Lots of fun and camaraderie.

Incredible setting, the food was great (how do you decide), and of course, one of the best breweries in Collingwood! Next month, we are across the street (literally) at Smoke, with phenomenal BBQ. Gluten free options as well.
