Friendship, Fellowship, and Fun

Thursday September 18th

President’s Comments

Due to Michael’s absence Ron Mitchell delivered Michael’s message for September which was one a of renewed sense of cooperation and collaboration between the Southern Georgian Bay PROBUS clubs.

At the last PROBUS Canada general meeting in April, Martin Buscher, who lives locally, was elected the Director of Ontario District 7. Martin is planning a networking session in October to further enable productive collaboration between local Southern Georgian Bay clubs, which I will attend.

Also, Georgian Bay Travel Group held a networking garden party at the home of Carl and Heather Wintermeyer where management representatives from all Southern Bay PROBUS clubs were invited to learn about the fascinating trips offered in 2026.

Finally, the Women’s PROBUS Club of Pretty River is offering an exclusive screening to all PROBUS club members of a documentary “Farmerettes”. The documentary tells the story of 40,000 teenage girls who volunteered on Canadian farms to help win WW2.

As a reminder, our Annual General Meeting on October 16, as many management committee members are away. Also, don’t forget membership dues are due, $65 for members and $90 for new members. Please see Gene Peycha at our monthly meetings for payment. Finally, the Women’s Auxiliary will continue to provide lunch for us, after our monthly meetings.

Kultural Attaché - Bill Barclay

Bill had a few cute jokes stories with some trivia this month.

Here are a few of the cute stories:

  • 1) Lee Trevino , a well known PGA golfer, was outside cutting his lawn one day when a lady in a big Cadillac stopped at his house and asked if he spoke English, yes I do he replied, she then asked how much he charged, he replied, well, the lady of the house allows me to sleep with her, the lady then sped off (true story);

  • 2) Isn’t it amazing how quickly employees at Home Depot will assist you after 20 minutes when you try to start up a chain saw;

  • 3) here’s a test for you, what world record is 1.3 seconds, it is when you hold a cat in one hand and you hold a gun in the other and then fire the gun, it takes 1.3 seconds for the cat to jump;

  • 4) A sweet grandmother calls St. Joe’s Hospital and asks the receptionist to speak to Norma Findlay in room 302 on how’s she’s doing, she is then put on hold and when the receptionist comes back on the line tells her Norma is doing fine and will be released tomorrow, she then asks Norma if she was her daughter, no replied the grandmother I’m Norma and I just wanted to know what is going on because nobody tells me anything here;

  • 5) A man walks into a pharmacy and asks the pharmacist, do you have anything for hiccups, the pharmacist leans over the counter and slaps the man in the face, that seemed to work you haven’t had a hiccup yet, well replied the man, I don’t have the hiccups but my wife in the car does.

Trivia:

  • 1) approximately how many fresh water lakes are there in Canada – 250,000;
  • 2) approximately how long is the Bruce Trail from Niagara to Tobermory – 900 kilometers:
  • 3) where is Santa’s Village located – Bracebridge;
  • 4) what is the original name for Ontario – Upper Canada West; Wasaga Beach is the longest fresh water beach, how long is it – 14 kilometers;
  • 5) what is the second longest beach and how long is it – Saugeen Beach (Sauble Beach) - 11 kilometers.

Thanks Bill!

Speaker: Mike King (Toronto Ski Club)

Steve McKee introduced Mike King, Toronto Ski Club, 2nd Vice President of the Board of Directors. Mike, in his presentation gave us a history of the Toronto Ski Club and the impact that a small ski hill, in its beginning days, had on the development of the Blue Mountain skiing community.

The Toronto Ski Club started in 1924 in High Park, Toronto with 84 members and grew to become the 3rd oldest ski club in Canada. In 1927, some members moved to the Summit Golf and Country Club to give members more of a challenge. The following year the ski club began renting land in Caledon and started skiing there. In the 1930’s the ski club grew to 3,000 members and became the largest ski club in Canada. During this time, they also purchased land in Craigleith, on the north end of Blue Mountain and the Dagmar Ski Club in Durham.

In the 1940’s, skiing became very exciting for people with the Toronto Ski Club buying land that is now the Southern Comfort ski lift and the helping to start the Beaver Valley and Osler Bluff ski hills. It was also during this time that Jozo Weider became part of the Blue Mountain ski community with the Toronto Ski Club leasing its entire real estate holdings to Jozo for 999 years.

In the late 1950’s and 60’s skiing started to take off. Members from the Toronto Ski Club broke off and started new ski clubs such as: Craigleith, Georgian Peaks and Alpine. From the 1970’s until today, Blue Mountain continues to provide great skiing for skiers and some can say that it all started with the TORONTO SKI CLUB!
