SPEAKER: Tom Carter

Subject: The History of Nuclear in Canada

Tom is a professional engineer having worked in the Ontario nuclear business for 50 years ….. and still consults, if needed. He started with Ontario Hydro in 1971 after having completed his Masters in nuclear engineering at Imperial College in London, England. He worked for ‘Hydro’ for 25 years and then started his own consulting and project management company… THE PRISM NUCLEAR GROUP.

He has worked in most aspects of the CANDU nuclear industry in Ontario, for example…. nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear wastes management, licensing and environmental approvals, reactor design and repair, and reactor rehabilitation for life extension.

Tom and his wife Louise live in Lora Bay and have lived in the Collingwood/Blue Mountains area since the early 2000s.

He will talk about…

  • The history of nuclear in Canada
  • How a CANDU reactor works and safety features
  • Nuclear wastes, how they are currently managed, and their disposal
  • Paying for wastes disposal, and reactor decommissioning
  • Rehabilitation of reactors and life extension
  • Future prospects for building large, small, and micro reactors… there is ‘lots of international buzz’
  • …. and, finally, time for lots of questions.

Cycling Group

Some photographs taken during the Cycling Group's Lake Couchiching ride on July the 8th. The pictures show the group together with a couple of amazing model airplanes, one of which had been doing some dramatic roles and spins while we were at a private airfield on the side of the trail that we were on. The owners of these models were very proud of their flying machines, particularly the owner of the yellow aircraft who treated us with an amazing show of aerial acrobats.
