Speaker: Tom Carter

Don Stockman introduced Tom Carter, a professional engineer who has worked in the Ontario nuclear business for 50 years. Tom began by telling us how the development of nuclear power energy came about in Canada, in 1942 whenCanada set up programs in the development of how nuclear power energy could be developed to provide energy for Canada. For the next few years Canada worked alone i, but in 1944 joined forces with the US and UK in discussing how this nuclear power energy could be developed further. Because of this, secrecy and security became paramount. Years later, Canada went in another direction from the US and UK. Due to its availability of natural resouces of natural uranium and heavy water, Canada began the developemnt of Candu reactors to provide energy for Canada. In 1968, Canada began the development of nuclear reactors at the Bruce Peninsula, which became the largest in the world. Over time more reactors were devloped in Pickering and Darlington giving us a total of 28 reactors in Ontario. These reactors are highly regulated with many types of storage to prevent release of the different types of radio active waste into the air.
